Job Description:

Our client, a financial services company requires a Controller to join their team. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller is responsible for all aspects of the company’s accounting functions, management reporting, internal controls and implementation. This role will also serve as a Dealer Representative in the interim with responsibility for investor relations.


  • Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial records in accordance with the applicable GAAP for the
    General Partner and LP1
  • Prepare financial statements for the General Partner and LP1
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures
  • Ensure that all tax returns are accurately prepared and submitted as required
  • Prepare all supporting information for the annual audit and liaise with senior management and external auditors as necessary
  • Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions
  • Maintain and improve financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit control and petty cash
  • Reconcile bank and investment accounts monthly
  • Review monthly results and implement monthly variance reporting, in cooperation with other team members
  • Manage the cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts in accordance with policy
  • Maintain the general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable systems
  • Maintain compliance with all statutory and tax filings
  • Conduct research on accounting and tax issues and present alternatives to senior management
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure that financial information is secure and stored in compliance with current legislation
  • Contribute to financial projections and models
  • Prepare investor reports and requested analysis on the loan portfolio
  • Prepare presentations and financial and business analysis for new products
  • Manage and improve robust risk, anti-money laundering and treasury controls
  • Liaise with investors, regulators and banks
  • Contribute to additional management reporting as required
  • Responsible for review of internal processes, procedures to ensure that optimal efficiency is achieved
  • Successful candidate is expected to deliver accountabilities and make decisions within the scope of this role with a high-level of autonomy. Guidance will be available from the VP of Finance as required
  • Develop and administer financial and administrative policies, standards and practices
  • Provide coaching and counselling for junior staff as required
  • In all internal and external interactions, foster a staff culture that supports the company’s strategy and vision
  • Manage the Staff Accountant to ensure high performance across all their activities


  • At least five years’ post-qualification experience (preferably with one of the Big Four Professional Services firms)
  • An undergraduate degree, preferably in business or finance
  • A recognized Canadian accounting designation
  • Full cycle accounting experience, including periodic and annual reporting, auditing and management of an annual external audit
  • Extensive knowledge and application of complex financial modelling is an asset
  • Excellent understanding of date and interest in using data to make valuable financial decisions
  • Experience in working for a medium sized business, preferably if the business is funded by private equity
  • Preference will be given to candidates with strong experience in the financial services sector. Experience in alternative investment / private credit institution is highly valued.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of Canadian GAAP
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to work with the applicable accounting software package
  • Experience automating accounting processes is an asset
  • Strong personal flexibility – able to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity and rapid change
  • Results orientated and is personally driven to achieve challenging objectives
  • Ability to consistently deliver work at high quality (intense focus on accuracy and presentation of data)
  • Exceptional attention to detail while working in a high paced, fast-growing environment and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Able to work with a professional, high-performing, and increasingly international team
